Compound Nouns- Složenice

Složene imenice(složenice) se sastoje od dve ili više reči, uglavnom od dve spojene imenice ili imenice i prideva, ali ima i drugačijih sastava, kao što možete videti niže u tabeli.

Postoje tri oblika složenica:

1. open-pišu se odvojeno (tennis shoe)
2. hyphenated – sa crticom između dva dela (six-pack)
3. closed or solid – spojeni delovi u jednu celinu (bedroom)

adjective	+	noun	full moon	I always feel crazy at full moon.
			blackboard	Clean the blackboard please.

verb(-ing)	+	noun	breakfast	We always eat breakfast at 8am.
			washing machine	Put the clothes in the red washing machine.
			swimming pool	What a beautiful swimming pool!
noun	+	verb(-ing)	sunrise	I like to get up at sunrise.
			haircut	You need a haircut.
			train-spotting	His hobby is train-spotting.
verb	+	preposition	check-out	Please remember that check-out is at 12 noon.
noun	+	prepositional phrase	mother-in-law	My mother-in-law lives with us.
preposition	+	noun	underworld	Do you think the police accept money from theunderworld?
noun	+	adjective	truckful	We need 10 truckfuls of bricks.

Veoma je bitno znati da se množina složenica gradi u zavisnosti od oblika složenice, kao i glavnog dela iste. Uglavnom množinu gradimo tako što dodamo nastavak –s na glavnu reč u složenici:

Ovde imamo primere različitog pravljenja množine kod nekih imenica nekad’ i sad’:

old style plural (very formal)	new style plural

2 bucketsful of water	2 bucketfuls of water	bucketful
4 cupsful of rice	4 cupfuls of rice	cupful

Neke složenice nemaju “glavnu” reč, pa treba pogledati u rečniku  kako se gradi množina takvih složenica, npr:

• higher-ups
• also-rans
• go-betweens
• has-beens
• good-for-nothings
• grown-ups

Složenice koje se sastoje od dve imenice [noun + noun], posmatrajte kao da je prva imenica ustvari pridev, i uvek na drugu dodajte –s.

long plural form becomes ›	plural compound noun        [noun + noun]
