Reč “adverb” potiče od latinskog prefiksa ad- i reči verbum (reč).
Prilozi su reči koje bliže određuju glagole, prideve, druge priloge ili celu rečenicu.
She runs quickly. She is so beautiful. She smokes very rarely. Naturally, you don’t have to come.
Prilozi nam govore kako, gde, kada i u kom obimu se nešto desilo. Priloge često koristimo za ulepšavanje rečenica, kada pišemo esej ili pismo.

Po svom sastavu prilozi se u engleskom jeziku dele na: proste, izvedene i složene.
- Prosti prilozi su: now (sada), then (tada), fast (brzo), loud (glasno), right (pravo) i dr.
- Izvedeni prilozi su oni koji se obrazuju od prideva dodavanjem nastavka “ly”:
beautiful – beautifully (lijep – lijepo)
bad – badly (loš – loše) itd.
- Složeni prilozi su: a great deal (mnogo), at least (bar), at present (sada), at last (najzad) itd.
Po značenju, prilozi mogu biti:
Adverbs of Manner-Prilozi za način ( how (kako), as (kao), so (tako), quickly (brzo), why (zašto), truly (zaista), quietly(mirno), hardly (jedva), usefully (korisno), happily (srecno) i dr.)
She moved slowly and spoke quietly.
Adverbs of Place-Prilozi za mesto (here (ovde), there (tamo), in (u), out (iz), near (blizu), far (daleko), down(dole), up (gore) i dr.)
She has lived on the island all her life.
He slept in his armchair.
Adverbs of Frequency-Prilozi za učestalost
She often goes by herself.
She takes the boat to the mainland every day.
Adverbs of Time-Prilozi za vreme (today (danas), ever (ikad), later (kasnije), in a few days (za par dana), soon(uskoro), early (rano), late (kasno) i dr.)

Adverbs of Purpose-Prilozi za uzrok
She drives her boat slowly to avoid hitting the rocks.
She shops in several stores to get the best buys. The teacher is ill and therefore is unable to come to school.
Adverbs of Degree/Quantity/Amount-Prilozi za količinu (more (više), no more (ne više), most (najviše), little (malo), many (mnogi), less (manje), very (vrlo), too (previše), enough (dovoljno), quite (sasvim)i dr.)
